Charlotte M Younge's, 'The Heir of Redcliffe'

The favourite novel of young officers in the Crimea... The enforced absence of 'English manhood' during the Crimea adds to the view of the single woman 'at home' as a threatening & destabilising power in art, literature and social life. She is not yet the 'New Woman' of later decades but she is more dangerous for the lack of any classification.
